Doing an internship for credit as part of your Université Laval study program

As of April 1, 2026, co-op work permits are no longer required for mandatory internships. As such, IRCC is no longer issuing these permits. Make sure you meet the requirements if you are doing an internship as part of your program of study.

Under Canadian immigration rules, student internships, even when unpaid, are considered work and require a work permit. Additionally, a social insurance number (SIN) is required for paid internships.

You may do a mandatory internship using the authorization to work on-campus associated with your study permit if you meet the following conditions.

  • You meet all the requirements for authorization to work on-campus.
  • Internships do not constitute more than 50% of the duration of your program of study.
  • All students in your program of study are required to do the internships in order to graduate.
  • Your study permit includes a statement that you are allowed to work on-campus (if not, see the Amending a study permit page).

If these conditions are met, you may do a mandatory internship without time limits during the fall and winter semesters.

For the summer semester, you may do a mandatory internship without time limits if:

  • You are registered as a full-time student
  • You are registered as a part-time student, the summer semester is your last semester, and you consistently maintained full-time status for the mandatory semesters in your program
  • You are registered as a part-time student and the summer semester is not your last semester, nor is it mandatory for your program, and you meet all of the following conditions:
    • You are authorized to work off-campus
    • You were registered as a full-time student for the previous winter semester
    • You intend to register as a full-time student for the following fall semester (unless that semester is your last before graduation and you otherwise maintained full-time status throughout your program)

You may do an optional internship using the authorization to work off-campus associated with your study permit if you meet the following conditions.

If these conditions are met, you may do an internship during the fall and winter semesters. However, you may not work off-campus for more than 24 hours per week between the internship and any other off-campus employment.

For the summer semester, you may do a mandatory internship without time limits if:

  • The summer semester is mandatory for your program and you are registered as a full-time student. However, you may not work off-campus for more than 24 hours per week between the internship and any other off-campus employment.
  • The summer semester is not mandatory for your program, nor is it your last semester. In this case, you may register as a part-time student and do an internship without a time limit as long as you were registered as a full-time student for the previous winter semester and intend to do the same for the following fall semester (unless that semester is your last before graduation and you otherwise maintained full-time status throughout your program).
  • The summer semester is your last semester of study, as this is considered a mandatory semester. If you are registered as a full-time student, or are registered as a part-time student but maintained full-time status for the other mandatory semesters in your program, you may do an internship. However, you may not work off-campus for more than 24 hours per week between the internship and any other off-campus employment.
